Garden

Kiva

Project

“The Emergence to the future Fifth World has begun.

It is being made by the humble people

of little nations, tribes, and racial minorities.

You can read this in the earth itself.

 Plant forms from previous worlds

are beginning to spring up as seeds.

This could start a new study of botany

if people were wise enough to read them.

The same kinds of seeds are being planted

 in the sky as stars.

The same kinds of seeds are being planted

 in our hearts.

 All these are the same,

depending how you look at them.

That is what makes the Emergence

 to the next, Fifth World.”

The Garden Kiva Project recalls Indigenous wisdom where the natural energies and temperature stability of the Earth herself were utilized for living, storage and ceremonial purposes.

The western kivas, or ceremonial structures, are often rectangular in ground plan. The dimensions are about 12-1/2 by 25 feet, the ceiling being 5-1/2 to 8 feet above the floor, slightly higher in the middle and with a raised entrance

Vision

-          Create an inspirational growing environment cradled in natural Earth for the purpose of helping to produce food and medicinal crops while re-establishing ancestral (heirloom) seed varieties.

-          Work as co-creators in imbuing plants and their resulting seed progeny with energy of Life

-          Contribute to biodiversity and Food Sovereignty

-          Experiment with ways to minimize energy and resource expenditures in hot, radiant climates

-          Experiment with protected growing practices and techniques

-          Incorporate knowledge gained, hands-on learning and applications into Educational Curriculum to be shared with others.

The Walipini Greenhouse – as a Model

Based on design by Brigham Young University

***Click walipini.pdf for full specification (about 3MB)***

Brigham Young University has created an interesting design for an Earth sheltered growing environment greenhouse.

Features

-          Extends down into the Earth approximately 6-8 feet

-          Uses Northern berm and earthen wall

-          Slant roof – insulated

-          Soil floor

-          Endwall entry doors for access and ventilation

Can include gutters and interior barrels for rainwater catchment

Full description, details and building plans can be seen here walipini.pdf (about 3MB)

Approach To Project

-          Create awareness of Garden Kiva Project in school and Permaculture community soliciting feedback

-          Create specific design for prototype size 8’ x 16’ x 8’

-          Create material list and construction plan

-          Invite those interested to contribute time and resources to build-out

-          Order and stage materials for build-out

-          Create and make available construction schedule and work days

-          Excavate

-          Build

-          Consecrate

-          Create experimental planting projects

-          Obtain planting materials and supplies

-          Create and make available planting project schedules and work days

-          Begin planting projects

-          Document and communicate project results to those interested
